Chapter 6

Brooklyn

“You want me to get you a beer, Lord?” I ask. Lord had just gotten back; he had been out all day. He looked tired.

“Nah, thanks Brooklyn.” He says. “ I’m gonna head to my office. Send Ryder when he comes in.”

I nod, giving him a smile. I couldn’t thank Lord enough for what he had done for me. He had taken me in when I didn’t have anyone. He had given me a home, and a family.

“You doing alright, Brook?” Lord asks. “You're happy here, right?”

“Yea, Pres.” I say, smiling. “I’m good.”

Lord gives me a smile before walking off. I resume eating the sandwich I had been eating, while flipping through a magazine. I look up as Red walks over and say, “Hey, Red. Do you think I’ve been too hard on Crow?”

“Well, A bit.” Red says. “I mean the guy came from Sinners. That’s where he spent most of his life. He is used to seeing women as prostitutes and strippers. You learn these things as a kid. He never had anyone to teach him some sense.”

“Yea?” I ask, taking another bite. “He fucking disgusts me though. You know I don’t take shit from Men. Especially disrespect. I gave him the benefit of doubt. But then I realized it’s not cause he is going through a hard time. He’s just a piece of shit.”

“Yea, well. If you want him to change, humiliating him like that ain’t gonna help.” Red says. “You gotta talk to him. That’s years of conditioning, Brook. Gotta give him a chance.”

“I guess.” I say, finishing my sandwich. I look up to see that Ryder had returned, and he had Crow with him. “Hey, Ryder.” I call out. “Lord wanted to see ya.”

“Thanks, Brook.” Ryder says, going over to give Red a kiss. He then walks off to the Lord’s office, leaving Crow behind. Crow is standing near the corner, not looking at me. It’s been three days since that incident, after which Crow has avoided me like the plague.

I take out a glass and pour him a Jack Daniels neat. I walk over and hand it to him, saying, “You wanna call a truce?”

He looks up at me, and I can see the surprise in his face. “Okay." He says, taking the glass from me.

“You know, you can’t treat women like shit. I know that’s how you were brought up. That’s what you saw growing up, but that ain’t the way.” I say, watching him.

He doesn’t reply, just takes a sip from his glass. “I am sorry about what happened with the Sinners though. I still don’t know why you fucking joined them.” I say, hoping to get him to talk.

“Seems like you already know what my father did. I was ashamed. Too full of shame to ask Ryder’s Dad to let me stay. My father stole from the club to support his habit. After that, I didn’t think the Saints would accept me?” Crow says, after a while. “All I wanted was a family, someone to call my own, you know? Saints were what I called my own.
